For those who are passionate about horses, the 63rd Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, running from February 15th-25th at WestWorld, is an event not to be missed. The competitions can be spectacular. This is a family friendly event that everyone can enjoy. Kids aged 12 years and younger are admitted at no charge. Many free activities will keep everyone entertained each day.
History of the Show
It began as an event of premier importance in 1955, then hosted on the grounds of the Arizona Biltmore Hotel. After that, it was held in Paradise Park in Scottsdale on 150 acres of land. In the beginning, 50 horses participated; now, nearly 2,400 horses are involved in the show, which is held at West World in Scottsdale, 16601 North Pima Road. This horse show has grown so much in participation and prestige that many of the top horses, along with the breeders, owners, and trainers, come together to compete at this event. As well, the 2018 Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show benefits several charities, including the March of Dimes, the ASU Western Equestrian Team, the Arabian Horseman’s Distress Fund, and the SCC Equine Sciences Scholarships.
Along with the impressive competitions and dressage shows, where both horse and rider are dressed to the “nines,” many free activities are available to entertain every age. These include:
Behind the scenes barn tours are an ideal way to learn more about the history of the Arabian Horse Show. Tours last approximately an hour and start at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm on the weekends. Other days may also be specified where you can participate in a tour.
For a small fee, children can also enjoy a petting zoo, and rides on ponies and camels.
